Autograph note by Sir Lionel Lindsay accompanying the portrait above, no date.

It reads:

"Dear Harry,
Florence Rodway started the Pastel era, and I bought a fine box of French pastels. I decided to try a portrait of Lawson, always a willing sitter, and as I had a room at the Bulletin I got him to sit for a couple of drawings, used one of them as a base for colour and this is the pastel you possess. Done about 1910-11. Lawson often came to town in cold weather in a sweater.
Ever yours,
Lionel Lindsay."
