Aphra Behn, the playwright and prose writer was also an accomplished poet. She is best known for her novella Oroonoko and the play The Rover. When her patron James the Duke of York became king in 1685 she celebrated his coronation with an ode of over 1000 lines. This collection of poems includes a lovely memorial poem about the portrait painter John Greenhill (1644-76) who painted a number of the authors whose works are represented in this exhibition.
