William Chillingworth was one of the greatest theological minds of his age. Converting to Catholicism and then back again, his The Religion of the Protestants was written out of a deep internal struggle over the true way of salvation. He was the 'intellectual motor' of the Great Tew Circle who so influenced Anglican theology after the Restoration. Such was the regard in which this book was held that John Locke recommended it above all others in Some thoughts concerning education, 'if you would have your son reason well'.
