Pope, Alexander (1688-1744)
The works.
London : Printed by W. Bowyer, for Bernard Lintot, 1717-1735.

Image from Pope's Works

One of the greatest poets of the eighteenth century, Alexander Pope was very careful with the publication of his writings and exercised strict editorial control. This edition of his Works, issued when he was only 29 was a meticulously self-crafted presentation of the poet. From the youthful portrait on the fontispiece to the selection and editing of the poems themselves, this was tailored to present the Catholic writer in the most favourable light. It was released at the same time as the 3rd volume of his translation of Homer's Illiad which was an enormous success and dominated the reception of Homer until the Romantic period.
